Project Overview

Location: West Ayton, Scarborough
Sector: Residential
Project Duration: 1 day

garage with asbestos roof garage with new roof

Scope of Work

A home in Scarborough required the removal of an old asbestos roof that had begun to delaminate. Due to the hazardous nature of asbestos, the removal process had to be carried out with strict adherence to the correct safety regulations.

The material was carefully taken down, transported away from the site, and disposed of in accordance with the appropriate legal and environmental guidelines.

Once the old roofing was safely removed, it was replaced with durable metal castellated sheets, specifically designed with anti-condensation properties to enhance longevity and performance.

To ensure a seamless and weatherproof finish, matching flashings were also installed, providing both practical protection and a visually cohesive appearance

The Challenge

One of the primary challenges of this project was managing the extent of contamination caused by the existing concrete roof sheets. As these materials contained hazardous asbestos, their safe removal required careful handling and strict compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

In terms of site constraints, there were no significant obstacles that impacted the workflow or logistics of the project. However, health and safety remained a key priority throughout the process.

To minimise risks and ensure the safety of both workers and the general public, clear signage and protective measures were put in place. This helped to prevent unauthorised access to the worksite and kept members of the public at a safe distance while the removal and replacement work was carried out.

The Solution

Before beginning the removal process, a thorough inspection and risk assessment were conducted. In this case, no additional testing was required, as a visual inspection confirmed the presence of asbestos.

Given the age of the property, it was highly likely that the garage roof contained asbestos, as is common with buildings from this period.

For the removal strategy, all work was carried out by qualified professionals with the necessary expertise to handle asbestos safely. The removal process was conducted in strict accordance with current regulations, ensuring that all safety and environmental requirements were met.

Compliance with industry regulations was a top priority throughout the project. All staff involved were fully trained in asbestos handling and removal, ensuring that every aspect of the job was performed to the latest legal and safety standards.

To further protect both workers and the surrounding environment, strict safety measures were followed. Staff wore the required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, and all asbestos waste was securely collected, transported, and disposed of in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

These precautions ensured a safe and compliant execution of the project from start to finish.

The Results

The project was successfully completed, with all asbestos-containing sheets and fixings safely removed and disposed of off-site in accordance with regulatory requirements. The removal process was carried out efficiently, ensuring that all hazardous materials were handled with care and professionalism.

While there are no specific environmental factors to highlight, the work was conducted responsibly, adhering to all necessary safety and disposal guidelines to minimise any potential risks.

Most importantly, the client was extremely pleased with the outcome. The new roofing provided a durable and visually appealing replacement, offering long-term protection and peace of mind.
